Lost your Android phone, or worried someone stole it? Before you panic, know that there’s a free system built directly into Android devices that lets you locate it on a map, make it ring at full volume, or even wipe all its data remotely. It’s called Find My Device, and it’s made by Google.

What you can do with Find My Device

Once you’ve located your phone on the map, you have three main actions available, either from your browser or the app:

Play Sound rings the phone at maximum volume for five minutes, even if it’s set to silent. Extremely useful if you lost it at home or in the office and think it’s nearby.

Secure Device applies a lock with a PIN, pattern, or password, preventing anyone from accessing your data. You can also add a message that shows on the lock screen — for example, your phone number.

Erase Device is the most drastic option: it deletes all content on the phone. After erasing, the device will no longer be trackable through this service, so only use it if you’re certain you can’t recover the phone any other way.

Requirements for locating the phone

For Find My Device to work, the phone needs to meet a few conditions at the time of the search: it must be powered on, signed into a Google account, have an active connection (mobile data or Wi-Fi), have location (GPS) turned on, and have the feature enabled.

To check or turn on this last setting, go to Settings → Google → Find My Device and make sure the toggle is set to ON.

How to locate the phone from a computer

The fastest way is to go directly to android.com/find from any browser. Sign in with the same Google account set up on the lost phone, and if the device is reachable, you’ll see its location on the map within seconds.

How to locate the phone from another smartphone

If you don’t have a computer handy but do have another Android phone, you can use the Find My Device app, free to download from the Play Store. It works exactly like the web version.

Alternatively, you can use a friend’s phone browser and access the web page as a guest: no installation needed.

Locating a Samsung or Huawei phone

If you own a Samsung device, you can alternatively use SmartThings Find, accessible through the SmartThings app or the official Samsung website. It offers similar functionality to Google’s service, including the ability to lock the device remotely.

For Huawei devices, the equivalent solution is called Find My Phone, available on the official Huawei website. This option is especially important for models that don’t support Google services (HMS).

Tips for being ready ahead of time

The most important piece of advice is to set everything up before anything happens. Once a phone is lost or stolen, you can no longer remotely enable features you hadn’t turned on beforehand.

It’s also worth making sure you have a PIN or password on the device: locking an unprotected phone is far less effective than one already set up with a strong access code.
