The iPad Air and iPad Pro are the two high-end models in the lineup, and at first glance the differences might not seem that sharp: both support Apple Pencil Pro and Magic Keyboard, both use an Apple Silicon chip (M4 vs. M5), both come in 11” and 13” sizes. Look closer, though, and three differences emerge that can genuinely sway the decision.

The display: the most concrete difference

The iPad Pro has an OLED Ultra Retina XDR panel with ProMotion technology, pushing the refresh rate up to 120Hz and delivering deeper blacks thanks to OLED. The iPad Air is capped at a Liquid Retina LCD panel at 60Hz. In everyday use — browsing, reading, video — the difference is less obvious than it looks on paper; it becomes much more noticeable if you draw with the Apple Pencil, watch a lot of HDR content, or simply notice the smoothness of 120Hz scrolling.

The chip: M4 vs. M5

Both chips are more than sufficient for the vast majority of uses, including heavy multitasking and professional productivity apps. The iPad Pro’s M5 chip adds extra headroom, most useful for 4K/8K video editing, 3D rendering, and particularly heavy on-device AI workloads. For most people, including many professionals who don’t run these specific workloads, the Air’s M4 chip isn’t a real bottleneck.

The Thunderbolt port, Pro only

Only the iPad Pro has a USB-C port with Thunderbolt/USB4 support, letting you connect high-resolution external monitors, fast external storage, and other professional peripherals at much higher throughput than the iPad Air’s plain USB-C. If your workflow depends on fast external peripherals, it’s a factor worth taking seriously.

Which one to choose

If your use is everyday — browsing, streaming, documents, the occasional drawing session — the iPad Air already gives you everything you need, at a noticeably lower price. If you work professionally with video editing, heavy graphics, or need fast external peripherals, the iPad Pro justifies the price gap with concrete advantages, not just a more prestigious name.
