The good news is that the market has matured: even budget models now ship with a 4K panel, HDR and a working smart platform, so the odds of making a genuinely bad purchase are lower than they used to be. This guide walks through the criteria that actually matter, roughly in order of impact on perceived quality, with concrete numbers instead of marketing labels.
Panel type: LED, QLED, Mini-LED or OLED
The first, and most important, decision is about panel technology — and it’s also where most of the confusion comes from, thanks to the different brand names manufacturers invent for the same underlying concept.
LED TVs are LED-backlit LCDs: the cheapest and most common option, with two backlighting variants — Edge LED (LEDs along the edges, less expensive but with weaker contrast control, often visible as a faint glow along the margins in dark scenes) and Direct LED (LEDs spread behind the whole panel, more uniform lighting, generally preferable at the same price).
QLED TVs are LED TVs with an added Quantum Dot layer: microscopic crystals that, lit by a blue light source, convert light into specific colors far more precisely than traditional color filters. Within the OLED family there’s also a technical distinction worth knowing: WOLED (developed by LG Display, also used under license by other brands) starts from a filtered white light source split into the three primary colors, while QD-OLED (championed by Samsung Display) starts from a blue source converted via Quantum Dot. In practice, QD-OLED panels tend to deliver more saturated colors at peak brightness, while WOLED has historically held up better in bright full-screen scenes — a gap that narrowed considerably by 2026, but still worth knowing when comparing OLEDs from different brands.
In practice: on a tight budget, a good LED or QLED is the sensible choice. If you mostly watch TV in the evening in a dim room, OLED delivers the most cinematic experience thanks to its true blacks. One practical detail worth always checking: not every HDMI port on a TV advertising “HDMI 2.1” actually supports the standard on every physical port — often only 1 or 2 do, while the rest stay at version 2.0. Always check the exact number in the spec sheet before connecting your console.
HDR
HDR (High Dynamic Range) widens the range of highlights, shadows and colors visible on screen compared to standard SDR content. The main formats are HDR10 (the universal baseline, present on almost every modern TV, but static: it uses the same parameters for the whole piece of content), HDR10+ and Dolby Vision (both dynamic, adjusting scene by scene instead of over the whole piece of content). Samsung has historically supported HDR10+ but not Dolby Vision (a business decision, not a technical limitation); LG, Sony, TCL and Hisense often support both.
One caveat: the HDR badge on a spec sheet alone doesn’t guarantee a great experience — on a panel with limited peak brightness (under 400-500 nits, typical of budget tiers), HDR stays more of a formal compatibility checkbox than a real quality leap. That’s one reason it’s always worth checking peak brightness too when comparing two TVs with the same list of supported HDR formats.
Smart OS
The smart platform determines which apps are available and how pleasant browsing content feels. The most common ones are Google TV/Android TV, LG’s webOS, Samsung’s Tizen, Hisense’s VIDAA, and Fire TV, often found on cheaper models (like several Xiaomi TVs). Nearly all of them now support the major streaming apps; the real differences show up in interface smoothness and how well the software ages over time.
