Burn-in (or permanent image retention) is a phenomenon where a static image, shown repeatedly for a long time, leaves a visible trace even after switching to different content — a term inherited from old plasma TVs, where the problem was much more pronounced and frequent.

How it happens

On OLED panels, where every pixel is self-emitting and produces its own light, prolonged and repeated exposure to the same static elements — a TV channel logo, an interface bar that never changes, a fixed video game HUD — can cause slightly uneven wear between the constantly-exposed pixels and their surroundings, which over time produces a visible ghost even on different content. The underlying mechanism is the same natural aging of the organic light-emitting materials, which wear out faster the longer they stay lit at the same intensity.

Why it’s much less of an issue today

Modern OLED TV manufacturers build in several complementary anti-burn-in algorithms: pixel shift, an imperceptible shift of the whole image by a few pixels at regular intervals to spread wear more evenly over a larger area; logo dimming, which automatically reduces the brightness of elements recognized as static logos or status bars; and periodic pixel refresh cycles, which the TV runs automatically, typically during overnight standby, to even out accumulated wear. The risk isn’t zero, but for normal home use — with content that changes regularly, like movies, TV shows and general streaming — it’s now very limited, to the point that major manufacturers offer specific burn-in warranties on several high-end OLED models.

When to be more careful

The risk remains more concrete in contexts where the same static images stay on screen for many consecutive hours, every day: work monitors with fixed interfaces (toolbars, always-visible taskbars), advertising signage running uninterrupted, or TVs used as a secondary monitor for software with permanently identical graphic elements. Video games with a very busy, static HUD (minimaps, health bars always in the same spot) also fall into this category if played for very long, repeated sessions over time.
