HDR10 and Dolby Vision are both HDR (High Dynamic Range) formats, designed to widen the range of highlights, shadows and colors visible on screen compared to standard SDR content — but they work very differently, and the technical gap has real practical consequences on picture quality.

HDR10: the universal static standard

HDR10 is the most widespread HDR format, supported by virtually every HDR TV and piece of content on the market: it’s the baseline standard any HDR-capable device must guarantee. It’s a static standard: peak brightness and color gamut parameters are set once, via a single metadata block, for the whole movie or episode, without adapting scene by scene. This means a very dark scene and a very bright one in the same film get processed with the exact same baseline parameters.

Dolby Vision and HDR10+: the dynamic standards

Dolby Vision (proprietary to Dolby Laboratories, with a paid license required for every device produced) and HDR10+ (open and royalty-free, backed by Samsung and Amazon among others) are dynamic formats: they adjust HDR parameters scene by scene, or even frame by frame, via additional metadata embedded in the video file itself. This in theory achieves a more precise result that’s more faithful to the director’s intent than HDR10’s fixed parameters, especially in movies with strong brightness contrasts between different scenes.

HLG: the third format, built for broadcast

There’s also a third format, HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma), jointly developed by the BBC and NHK specifically with live broadcasting in mind, where embedding complex dynamic metadata in real time isn’t feasible. Its main advantage is backward compatibility: an HLG signal stays watchable even on a TV without HDR support, still showing an acceptable SDR image instead of an error or washed-out picture.

Does the difference actually show?

In practice, the gap between HDR10 and the dynamic formats depends heavily on the panel’s peak brightness and overall quality: on a TV with limited peak brightness (under 400-500 nits, typical of budget tiers), the perceived difference between HDR formats is often marginal with typical sources (streaming, Blu-ray), because the panel doesn’t have the dynamic range to fully exploit even baseline HDR10 anyway. It becomes more noticeable on high-end panels with brightness above 1,000 nits, in light-controlled environments, and with content mastered at very high brightness — precisely the conditions we cover in our full guide on how to choose a TV.

Which one should you pick in a TV?

You can’t really choose: every TV supports a fixed set of HDR formats decided by the manufacturer, and it can’t be changed via software after purchase. In general, Samsung supports HDR10+ but not Dolby Vision (a business decision to avoid Dolby Laboratories royalties, not a technical panel limitation); LG, Sony, TCL and Hisense often support both dynamic formats on their mid-to-high-end models. If you’re not sure how much this actually matters to you, it’s not a criterion worth paying a lot extra for over other factors like the panel’s actual peak brightness.
