QLED is a brand originally introduced by Samsung (now also used by Hisense and TCL) for an LED TV with an added Quantum Dot layer, designed to partly close the color-accuracy gap with OLED while staying on a cheaper-to-produce LCD base.
How it works
Quantum Dots are semiconductor microscopic crystals that, when hit by a blue light source, convert light into specific colors far more precisely than the traditional color filters of a standard LED: the size of each individual crystal determines the emitted color, allowing extremely fine color calibration. The result is a wider color gamut and higher peak brightness — the most recent QLED models often exceed 1,000 peak nits — while keeping the same underlying LED/LCD technology, with all its advantages (lower cost, high brightness) and limitations (backlighting that can’t be perfectly localized).
QLED is not OLED
Despite the similar name — a marketing detail that causes no small amount of confusion for first-time TV buyers — QLED and OLED are fundamentally different technologies. QLED remains a backlit LCD panel: it can’t reach an OLED’s true blacks, because the backlight can never switch off as precisely, pixel by pixel, but at most in zones of varying size (on more advanced Mini-LED models). In exchange, a good QLED reaches higher peak brightness than an equivalent OLED, making it a more effective choice in very bright rooms or with direct light hitting the screen.
Practical advantages
Besides more vivid colors, QLED TVs can scale up to very large screen sizes without the steep cost of an equally sized OLED — producing large LCD panels remains structurally cheaper than OLED panels — and don’t carry the (now much reduced) burn-in risk associated with OLED panels, since there are no organic pixels subject to uneven wear over time.
