Refresh rate indicates how many times per second a TV updates the image shown on screen, expressed in Hz (Hertz). The higher it is, the smoother fast motion appears, with less blur — something that becomes crucial in certain use cases and nearly irrelevant in others.
When it actually matters
For watching movies, shows and linear TV, 60Hz is more than enough: most broadcast and streaming content is produced at lower frame rates anyway — 24fps for traditional cinema, 25 or 30fps for a lot of TV content — so a higher refresh rate doesn’t add real smoothness to these sources. High refresh rate becomes important mainly with current-gen consoles or gaming PCs, where a 120Hz or 144Hz panel, paired with HDMI 2.1 support and VRR, noticeably reduces motion blur and improves perceived responsiveness in fast-moving scenes — a real advantage in competitive online titles where every fraction of a second counts.
Watch out for inflated numbers
Many budget TVs advertise figures like 400Hz or 800Hz that don’t correspond to the panel’s real native refresh rate, but to “equivalent” values calculated through software interpolation: the TV generates artificial intermediate frames between the real ones to simulate higher smoothness. This processing can introduce visual artifacts (the so-called “soap opera effect”, which makes movies look unnaturally smooth) and often needs to be manually disabled in the picture menus for viewing closer to the original. The reliable figure to look for in the spec sheet is always the native refresh rate, typically 50, 60, 100, 120 or 144Hz.
Refresh rate and sports
Worth a separate note for high-intensity sports — soccer, tennis, motorsport — where even in passive viewing (no controller in hand) a higher refresh rate reduces blur in the fastest action, like a ball crossing the screen quickly. The effect remains less pronounced than in gaming, though, where direct control over the action makes every millisecond of responsiveness immediately noticeable to the player.
